The Zodiac War (十二大戦(じゅうにたいせん), Jūni Taisen, lit. "War of Twelve") is the titular event which the Zodiac War novels revolve around. It is a battle royale-style tournament which occurs after every twelve years where various warriors are pitted against each other in fights to the death, with the winner having their greatest wish granted.[1]

Background[]

While much of the history which lead to the establishment of the Zodiac War is kept vague, the organizers are said to be extremely influential, not only because they're capable of granting the winners any wish they desire (such as the resurrection of deceased individuals) but also because, once a warrior has been selected, refusing the invitation means death. The organizers are also capable of selecting very expensive venues as arenas for the wars, with the ninth war using a space station and the twelfth being an entire metropolitan city, which had to be completely evacuated. Although unknown to the warriors, the true purpose of the war is for a select few influential people to bet entire countries as chips. The war is held once every twelve years, and the rules of the competition change for each war. The only known individual working under the event organizers is Duodecuple, the referee of the twelfth war.

Wars[]

Fourth War[]

The only detail given about the fourth Zodiac War is that its theme was "the prohibition of carrying weapons".[2]

Eighth War[]

The only detail given about the eighth Zodiac War is that it was won by a then twelve-year-old Sir Cancer, who ended up the victor twelve minutes after starting, but wished to be kept off the record, so no one else knows this.[3]

Ninth War[]

A few details about the ninth Zodiac War are known, such as the venue being a space station and the winner being Hitsujii, who also went on to fight in the twelfth war.

Twelfth War[]

The twelfth Zodiac War, portrayed in the novel Zodiac War. Twelve warriors named after the eastern zodiac signs are gathered in an abandoned metropolitan city and each fed a highly poisonous crystal known as a Beast Gem (獣石(じゅうせき), Jūseki) which, once ingested, causes a unique chemical reaction that kills the victim in exactly twelve hours. The goal of the warriors is to gather all twelve Beast Gems from inside their opponents, the one obtaining them being named the winner. The victor of the Twelfth War was Nezumi, who wished to have his memories erased.[1]

Twelfth War (Alternate)[]

A different version of the twelfth Zodiac War, portrayed in the novel Zodiac War Vs. Zodiac War. The objective is to the capture twelve war criminals (whom are named after the Western Zodiac) dead or alive, with all the wishes of the Eastern Zodiac warriors being granted upon fulfilling that goal.[4] In reality, this war is a forgery staged according to the Crime Plan (犯罪計画(はんざいけいかく), Hanzai Keikaku), devised by Sir Cancer and executed by the Twelve War Criminals; the real objective of the plan being to desecrate the Zodiac War, and the concept of war as a whole, by massacring the twelve warriors before they could even participate in the real battle. To that end, Sir Cancer gathered information about the management committee from his network, and sent Doctor Finish (disguised as Duodecuple) to fool the warriors into believing the fake rules. In order to show the atrocity and meaninglessness of war and avoid any possibility of accidentally becoming praised as great heroes themselves for their victory, the Twelve War Criminals are to die regardless of the outcome of the war, whether they survive or not. The plan's success rate was reportedly below 1%.[5]
