"I said with a posed look."
- — Yotsugi Ononoki
Yotsugi Ononoki (
Personality[]
Yotsugi's most apparent trait is her expressionlessness; she is always seen wearing a deadpan face, no matter her feelings, which leads people to initially believe that she has no emotions[1]. However, in reality, she is simply unable to express her emotions to others in the way normal people can. According to Shinobu Oshino, Yotsugi is an aberration whose role isn't to become like humans, but to live among them and coexist; to that end, she dons multiple different unnatural mannerisms in an effort to relate and appeal to people, and is quite easily influenced by the people around her[3]. While unable to express her own emotions, Yotsugi has demonstrated great sensibility in regards to other people's feelings, such as Mayoi Hachikuji or Deishuu Kaiki[4][5]. In addition, unlike Shinobu, Yotsugi's childish appearance never seems to affect her demeanor, and she often acts as a voice of reason. During the Mirror World incident, her inner emotional side came up to the surface, and she became very expressive, showing off her "true personality"[6].
Yotsugi has expressed that she is always searching for a purpose after her revival, believing that her revival has to serve some kind of reason. While being a Shikigami, she is given a lot more freedom than most familiars by her master[7]. It seems this approach is shared by all of the specialists who created her, as she was ultimately given the choice to decide with her own free will who she would follow, between Yozuru and Tadatsuru Teori[3]. She appears to have a fairly close relationship with Yozuru, being the only person that Yotsugi calls her "big sister", although the extent of their relationship is unknown[2]. In regards to her job as a specialist, she acts according to Yozuru's orders, no matter what they may be, although she has stated that she doesn't want to have to face Koyomi Araragi, showing some apprehension. Nevertheless, she doesn't seem to have any qualms about killing others if it's for her job, attacking Tadatsuru during the kidnapping of Suruga Kanbaru and Koyomi's sisters[3].
She considers Koyomi a good friend, and often helps him out, acting as a reliable ally to him. However, she holds a kind of mutual rivalry with Shinobu, often badmouthing her about her age. Even so, she is equally scared of Shinobu's true power, having been beaten up by her previously, although she is too prideful to admit it. She was also shown to shiver while being held in Izuko Gaen's lap, suggesting she might be afraid of the woman. She appears to like muscles, trying to touch Koyomi's several times after seeing him shirtless[4].
Appearance[]
Yotsugi has an eccentric and unique appearance. Physically, she looks to be a young girl around twelve years old, with medium length cyan hair tied into twintails, lime green eyes with thick eyebrows, pale skin and pointy, elf-like ears. She is most often shown in her signature outfit, a short sleeved frilly orange and red dress, with a white turtle neck collar collar and white frills all along the top part, the top of her dress also featuring a cross-like symbol also appearing on Yozuru's outfit. Additionally, she wears thigh high striped black and turquoise stockings, a pair of yellow rain boots and a strange hat with a ribbon and googly eyes. While living at the Araragi household, Yotsugi is also shown wearing one of Tsukihi's loose yukatas, as well as a towel wrapped around her head. Her "mirror world" version sports a slightly different outfit, more reminiscent of Yozuru's clothes. Her white collar is more loose and she wears a brown short sleeved cardigan, similar to Yozuru's, but only going down to her waist, and with puffed sleeves, over her dark gray frilly top. Instead of a skirt, she wears a pair of red pants, similar to Yozuru's but more frilly, as well as a pair of black shoes. She also wears black armbands around her wrists, once again similarly to Yozuru.
Background[]
The details of Yotsugi's previous life as a human are completely unknown, although, since she looks like a child as an aberration, it can be inferred that she died young. After one hundred years as a corpse, she was revived as a tsukumogami-like aberration by the Occult Research Club, consisting of Izuko Gaen, Meme Oshino, Yozuru Kagenui, Tadatsuru Teori and Deishuu Kaiki, fifteen years ago[3]. The ritual of her revival resulted in every member being cursed in one way or another as compensation[2]. Afterwards, a fight over "ownership" of Yotsugi broke out between Tadatsuru Teori and Yozuru Kagenui, which ended once Yotsugi herself chose to go with Yozuru, resulting in Tadatsuru exiting the Gaen Network and becoming an independent specialist[3]. Yozuru and Yotsugi went on to become an exorcist duo specializing in immortal aberrations.
Abilities and Equipment[]
- Unlimited Rulebook (
例外のほうが多い規則 , Anrimiteddo Rūrubukku, lit. "A Rulebook Made Mostly of Exceptions"): Yotsugi's special ability as an aberration. While its exact functions are unknown, it has been shown to be capable of feats such as unleashing a destructive attack by expanding the size of her finger by an enormous amount, a strike with enough force to destroy a house's wall and completely obliterate a human being[1]. Aditionally, using this ability, Yotsugi is also capable of blasting off from the ground and vertically flying away, being capable of traversing to the exact destination she desires[4]. - Physical Strength: Yotsugi is shown to possess inhuman physical strength, being capable of carrying a human being on the tip of her finger without struggling in any way[1], as well as surviving the intense pressure of travelling at high speeds using Unlimited Rulebook[4].
Quotes[]
- (Yotsugi's new catchphrase, said while making a peace sign) "Yay, peace peace."
- (Yotsugi's previous catchphrase) "I said with a posed look."
Trivia[]
- Yotsugi's first name is written with the same kanji as the word "yosetsu", meaning "cotangent".
- Yotsugi's last name, Ononoki, means "axe in a tree".
- In the TV version of episode seven of the Monogatari Series: Second Season anime, Yotsugi is shown smiling and blushing in one shot. This was, however, redacted in the blu ray version, instead featuring Ononoki's regular deadpan expression[8].
- In the fighting game BlazBlue: Central Fiction, a skin with Yotsugi's color palette is available as DLC for the character Rachel Alucard.
- Yotsugi refers to herself using the first person pronoun boku (
僕 ), a pronoun commonly used by men but rarely ever used by women.
