"I'm platinum mad!"
- — Tsukihi Araragi
Tsukihi Araragi (
Personality[]
In Koyomi's words, while Karen is exactly as she appears on the outside, Tsukihi's appearance belies her true nature. Perhaps even more impulsive and emotional than Karen, she usually disguises this aspect of her personality under her usually calm, levelheaded, polite and feminine demeanor. Tsukihi is always true to herself, having no real hidden insecurities or regrets, shown by how she remained virtually unchanged during the events of Koyomi Reverse. She recognizes that much of her beliefs and personality are influenced by others, particularly her view on justice, which she claims she wouldn't have been able to so strongly believe in without the influence of her brother and sister, who are both driven by their clear internal images of it. Tsukihi is the type of person to let the wind guide her in life, not really ruminating over the future, but rather taking whatever choice she feels is right in the moment. Even though she is a relatively simpleminded girl, this aspect also allows her to see the world in a much clearer light, and she demonstrates surprisingly mature insights when talking to Koyomi or Nadeko Sengoku, who both have their eyes clouded by their multiple issues.
Although she doesn't appear to be much smarter than Karen, in the duo of the Fire Sisters, Tsukihi takes the role of strategist, not being as actively involved in physical violence as her sister. Even so, during multiple anecdotes told by Koyomi, Tsukihi's impulsiveness manifests as extreme recklessness and endangering her own safety, such as one occasion when she jumped off a rooftop. However, this recklessness doesn't appear to be born out of the same feelings of inadequacy as her brother, but rather, just split second decisions in which she fails to consider the consequences of her actions. Nonetheless, it appears she takes a role of intelligence gathering most of the time, being quite proficient at tracking down information.
She is extremely close to Karen, due to their similar ages, and the two are almost always seen together, even being dubbed "yuri sisters" by Koyomi. While she enjoys her relationship with her sister, she recognizes that their duo would have to split up once Karen moved on to high school before her, although she gets mad when Koyomi points the probability of their relationship growing more distant. Her relationship with Koyomi is not as close as hers and Karen's, and she also doesn't show as much trust and complete obedience as Karen shows to him. Even so, while they do tend to bicker a lot in their conversations, she is still very close to him, giving him advice on topics like love and telling him to not take so much responsibility on his shoulders. Additionally, while she often gets angry over Koyomi and Karen's toothbrush incident, when Koyomi keeps Tsukihi's head in place, keeping her from seeing his lack of a reflection, she interprets this action as him wanting to kiss her, and instantly accepts the gesture (although they would then get interrupted by Karen), despite showing disgust at Koyomi's previous time kissing her a few months earlier.
Appearance[]
Tsukihi is a young girl with the same features as the rest of the Araragi Family, namely grey eyes, black hair and an ahoge. Her body is slightly more petite and than Karen's, being shorter than Koyomi and lacking her older sister's fitness. Due to her fast growing hair, Tsukihi changes her hairstyle very differently, showing off different lengths and styles depending on the time of year, including a long, straight haircut with even bangs, a very short bob haircut, a shoulder length bob haircut, a ponytail with her bangs parted to the sides, showing her forehead, messy short hair, long twintails and ankle-length straight hair, grown for the purpose of making a wish. Unlike her sister, Tsukihi wears feminine, Japanese style clothes, being shown most often wearing yukata of various colors and with various patterns. She is also shown wearing a different outfit, consisting of a blue miniskirt, a pink sleeveless top and a red scarf around her neck. She is also shown wearing the Tsuganoki 2nd Middle School white and blue sailor uniform, coupled with black thigh high stockings.
Background[]
Tsukihi was born from the Dying Bird infecting her mother due to the effects of Seishirou Shishirui's vampiric aura over the town. During elementary school, Tsukihi befriended a girl named Nadeko Sengoku, whom she often invited to her house, the two playing with young Karen and Koyomi. She was also present during the time Sodachi Oikura was living in their house. Upon enrolling in middle school, her mother sent the two sisters to Tsuganoki 2nd Middle School, as opposed to Nanahyakuichi Middle School, the school that both Nadeko and a younger Koyomi attended. In their middle school years, the two girls quickly developed a reputation as the Fire Sisters, engaging in many incidents and lending others a helping hand, and they quickly earned a following, many people being grateful to them. Tsukihi began a relationship at some point with a boy named Rousokuzawa, although not much is known about him.
Abilities and Equipment[]
- Immortality: Due to the Dying Bird's effects, Tsukihi is immortal, being unable to be killed by any outside injury or disease. However, her lifespan is still that of a regular human being, after which the bird would reincarnate in the form of another child. In order to disguise it, the immortality varies in speed based on the gravity of the threat. With a minor injury, the healing time would be closer to that of a normal human, while a mortal injury, such as Yotsugi Ononoki's Unlimited Rulebook, heals instantly. Her regenerative ability also causes her hair to grow much faster than a normal person, leading to her everchanging hairstyles.
Quotes[]
- (Tsukihi's catchphrase) "I'm platinum mad!"
- (Tsukihi to Koyomi) "Dealing with you has gotten a lot easier. I mean, from our perspective, it's good because it's easier to get our way. But, you know, really... Don't just grow up and leave us behind. It'd be boring that way."
- (Tsukihi's love advice to Koyomi) "You can come up with any number of reasons why you love someone. Like they are cool, or kind, or tall, or rich. There are all sorts of reasons you can say, but those are all lies. They're just excuses you tell yourself to rationally justify your emotions. Well, not so much excuses, as tricks. It's like a ladder you climb, based on the conclusion that you love them. When you feel like you want to be together forever, that's love."

Trivia[]
- Tsukihi's first name means "moon fire", which is also the source of her new alias after the Fire Sisters' split. Additionally, both she and Karen have the kanji for fire (火) in their names. The first kanji in the names of the sisters also correspond to the Japanese names for the first two days of the week, with Tsukihi's 月 matching the word for Monday (月曜日). This is a correlation to Koyomi's first name, which means "calendar".
- Tsukihi's last name, Araragi is made up of the kanji for "pandering", which is also a part of the word for "fool", the kanji for "good", repeated twice, and the kanji for "tree".
- Karen and Tsukihi are featured on the covers for the two parts of Nisemonogatari, which are the only books in the series to not have a new cover illustration in the English release.
- Tsukihi's popular saying "platinum mad" was infamously translated as "dagnabbit mad" in the official English publication of Nisemonogatari, resulting in controversy and in-jokes within the English speaking community.
- Tsukihi's immortality is basically the polar opposite of Kuchiha Madoka's, a character from the Zaregoto Series, who has an infinite lifespan but can be killed by outside injury.
