"No matter the reason, it’s never enough to kill someone. So maybe I'll be killed without a reason too. Maybe one day, suddenly, abruptly, without any reason, I'll be killed."

Ririsu Kotohara

Ririsu Kotohara (琴原(ことはら) りりす, Kotohara Ririsu), also known as Meat Names ((にく)名前(なまえ), Niku no Namae), is a character from the Sekai Series. She is a student at Outouin Private Academy, a classmate of Samatoki Hitsuuchi and the childhood friend of Hakohiko Mukaezuki[1].

Personality[]

Ririsu has a casual and friendly personality. She isn't shy about asking Samatoki to let her copy his homework, and tends to call herself stupid, although her math grades are reportedly better than Samatoki's. She is eager to tease her classmate by calling him by his nickname, but hates being called by her own. She developed feelings for Samatoki at some point during their time together, but never managed to get the courage to confess[1], although when she felt like it was her last chance, she impulsively divulged her true feelings, despite it being detrimental to her plans. Her affection is also what led her to attempt to attack Rokunin Kazusawa, who had been giving Samatoki trouble, and accidentally kill him[2]. Possibly because of those feelings, she held a grudge against Samatoki for a long time because of when he asked her to distance herself from him for the sake of her sister[1].

Ririsu has a close friendship with Hakohiko, both of them having been in the kendo club together before she quit due to unfair treatment due to her gender. Although she trusts him deeply, she never had any kind of romantic feelings toward him[1]. After accidentally murdering Rokunin Kazusawa along with Hakohiko, her mind was scarred by the realization that death is a part of her world, which had previously been a distant concept, far from her mind. This understanding left her unstable, deeply afraid that she would die at any moment for no real reason, just like how Kazusawa had. Furthermore, the guilt of what she'd done, coupled with the regret of involving Hakohiko in it, led her to consider suicide, although Samatoki prevented this outcome by falsely declaring that he was in love with her, thereby making her crime seem like it had some worth[2]. She has a hatred for Kuroneko Byouinzaka due to Hakohiko's past with her, avoiding the infirmary entirely because of her and reportedly snapping whenever she hears her name[3].

Appearance[]

Ririsu is a young woman with round eyes and light-colored hair in a bob haircut, with bangs parted to the left. She is shown wearing the Outouin Academy uniform, consisting of a gray, short-sleeved sailor uniform with puffed shoulders, and a brown skirt.

Background[]

Ririsu and Hakohiko became friends at an early age, reportedly as far back as kindergarten, and both were members of the kendo club since elementary school. In her first year of high school, however, she quit the sport because she felt she there was some unfair treatment of the girls' kendo club, the boys being heavily favored[1]. During middle school, she got into a serious fight with Hakohiko. Although the nature of the incident is unclear, Hakohiko taking advantage of Kuroneko Byouinzaka's sexual services played a part in the event, which lead to Ririsu's hatred for Byouinzaka[3]. In her first year of high school, when Ririsu's whole class went out for yakiniku to celebrate the cultural festival, she was able to guess the types of meats with unusual accuracy, which earned her the strange nickname of Meat Names. During that same cultural festival, she met Samatoki for the first time, seeing him hanging out with Hakohiko. Although it wasn't a very noteworthy event for Samatoki, Kotohara took interest in the boy, and later even changed her university of choice just so that she could be in the same class has him[1].

Abilities and Equipment[]

  • Kendo (剣道(けんどう), Kendō): Before retiring, Ririsu regularly did kendo, even becoming a second dan, and even after her retirement from the sport, she still occasionally performed swings, keeping herself in shape. Due to her always practicing with Hakohiko, her swing ended up being similar to his, which annoyed her, as she didn't want to be regarded as just an inferior copy of the boy[1]. Her abilities are good enough to make Samatoki consider her sparring match with Hakohiko, performed while disguised as Kazusawa, to be "sublime"[2].
