"I don’t know anything. You’re the one who knows, Araragi-senpai."
- — Ougi Oshino
Ougi Oshino (
Personality[]
Ougi appears to be a mysterious, shady individual. She has an unbreakable poker face, never showing any real emotion, and speaks in a calm, collected tone, always taking the lead during any conversation she participates in. She has a distinctly condescending attitude, mainly towards Koyomi[3], though some of it shines through in her interactions with Suruga Kanbaru as well[4][5]. She often calls Koyomi a fool, criticizing and making fun of him whenever she can[3]. Nevetheless, she also acts very close to him, calling herself his friend only few days after they met, and being very physically intimate with him, often getting uncomfortably close[6].
Ougi is shown to be a huge fan of mystery novels, always acting the part of a great detective, occasionally lifting the mannerisms of such characters, and becoming excited when conducting an investigation. She has no hesitation when it comes to investigating, breaking down the door to Sodachi Oikura's abandoned home without a second thought. Even so, she is interestingly also shown to be a germophobe, covering her mouth with a napkin when entering the dusty old home[7]. After being defeated and abandoning her goal, Ougi starts showing a more playful side, having a clear fondness of playing pranks on people, her biggest example being her switching uniforms with Koyomi[8]. Her enjoyment of toying with people can also be seen in her relationship with Kanbaru, often acting in outlandish ways and baffling the older girl. She has a similar relationship with her as she did with Koyomi prior to his graduation, subtly leading Kanbaru around, although she is notably less vitriolic with her and appears to have good intentions at heart[5].
She has a rivalry with Tsubasa Hanekawa, holding a grudge against her ever since she took away her opportunity to visit Sodachi alongside Koyomi. She subsequently acts highly confrontational towards her, taking every opportunity to belittle her during their next meeting[6]. She is revealed to have been cautious of Hanekawa from the very beginning, however, since she knows the girl's capabilities. Her own name, as well as her catchphrase, are also reminiscent of Hanekawa. In the end, after witnessing her bring Meme Oshino into town all the way from Antarctica, Ougi admitted defeat, putting an end to their feud[1].
Ougi's main trait is being an 'unknown', which is reflected in both her behavior, lacking any strong outbursts of emotion, as well as her appearance, androgynous and nondescript. This state is often emphazised through the oft-repeated motto of "Ougi Oshino is Ougi Oshino"; however, it is just an attempt at hiding her true identity: a materialization of Koyomi Araragi's dark feelings of self-hatred. Ougi became an impersonation of the "Darkness" in order to punish Koyomi for 'cheating', for achieving happiness when he feels he doesn't deserve it. As such, she sets her sights on destroying every instance of him succeeding, as he doesn't believe the outcome is one he should have been able to get. Once the truth is revealed, some similarities between Ougi and Koyomi do show themselves; even when she is sure that she will fail and be eradicated, she doesn't run away from it, fighting even when she knows she will lose. However, in their final confrontation, Ougi does admit that Koyomi had been right all along, swayed by his determination to finally learn to love himself. After Meme Oshino calls her his niece, her lie becomes the truth, and she is spared from being absorbed by the true "Darkness" as she finally gains a true identity of her own. In the end, she is shown to develop a sort of admiration for Koyomi, no longer considering his actions to be wrong[1].
Appearance[]
Ougi has the appearance of a teenage girl with short, jet black hair in a bob haircut, pitch-black eyes, and an overall fairly androgynous look. She is usually shown wearing a variation of the Naoetsu Academy uniform, consisting of a pink shirt, slightly warmer in color than the regular uniform, with long sleeves that cover her hands, red cuffs and a red collar, with a black-tie instead of the usual ribbon, worn over a black turtleneck. Additionally, she wears a dark gray miniskirt, black leggings, brown shoes, and black leather gloves. After the events of Owarimonogatari, Ougi begins wearing the male uniform of Naoetsu Academy, a black gakuran with red highlights and gray shoes, due to a prank she played in Zoku Owarimonogatari. Ougi is also shown wearing a black, frilly dress that exposes the shoulders, alongside elbow-length black gloves and thigh-high black stockings. On the cover of Ougimonogatari, Ougi is shown wearing a mix of the male and female Naoetsu uniforms, with the black blazer of the male uniform and the gray miniskirt and leggings of the female uniform.
Background[]
Ougi's manifestation occurred in various phases[1], the first of which being Koyomi Araragi's first encounter with the "Darkness", when it attacked Mayoi Hachikuji for refusing to move on to the afterlife[9]. At this time, Koyomi learned of the existence of a phenomenon which corrects that which is wrong. Then, the second phase of Ougi's creation is Koyomi's confrontation with Shinobu Oshino's former thrall, Seishirou Shishirui. During his rampage, Seishirou used Energy Drain on Suruga Kanbaru, which lead to a part of the Rainy Devil, currently possessing Suruga, to flow into Seishirou. After that, Shinobu consumed Seishirou, thereby having that piece of the Devil flow into her and Koyomi by way of their connection[10]. As the Rainy Devil is an aberration created from Tooe Gaen's feelings, when Koyomi absorbed the Devil, he gained the property of being able to manifest aberrations himself.[1]
Having gained this ability, Koyomi's feelings of self-hatred and his lack of self-worth morphed themselves into the form of an aberration, using the surname Oshino due to the precedent set by Izuko Gaen pretending to be Meme Oshino's sister[10]. This new aberration, namely Ougi Oshino, possessed the vampiric skill of Matter Creation due to Koyomi's former state as a vampire. After her birth, Ougi transferred into Naoetsu Private Academy as a first-year student and asked Suruga Kanbaru to introduce her to Koyomi as Meme Oshino's niece.[11]
Abilities & Equipment[]
- Vampiric Abilities: Due to Seishirou Shishirui flowing into Koyomi thanks to Shinobu's link, Ougi inherited the natural abilities of a vampire[1].
- Regeneration: While never directly showing it, Ougi presumably has the regenerative abilities of a vampire. She is also shown accelerating the process of hemostasis in Koyomi's severed arm by touching the wound, which might be due to her vampiric healing properties[1].
- Matter Creation: A vampiric skill inherited from Seishirou, which allows her to create objects, letting her create the ghost classroom of Naoetsu Academy[11], a temporary recreation of the burned-down Eikou Cram School[1] and a 100% absorption mirror, using a piece of a blackboard[8].
- Barrier Creation: An ability native to the Lost Cow, inherited from Seishirou, who'd used his Energy Drain on one, among other aberrations. Using this, Ougi created a barrier around Naoetsu Town, such that other specialists cannot enter it and attack her, although Izuko Gaen circumvented it by using Heartspan[1].
- Thought Manipulation: Ougi shows the ability to manipulate people's thoughts. This is most apparent in how Koyomi never questions the source of Ougi's information and accepts her words at face value, as well as his tendency to open up to her and say more than he means to[11][7]. She can use this ability on other people aside from Koyomi, shown by how she gets Suruga Kanbaru (and presumably the rest of the school) to instantly accept that she had always been a boy, despite clearly remembering her to be a girl[4].
Quotes[]
- (Ougi's catchphrase to Koyomi) "I don’t know anything. You’re the one who knows, Araragi-senpai."
- (Ougi to Tsukihi Araragi) "People live of their own accord. What can't live of their own accord... are monsters. Just like you and me."[1]
- (Ougi to Koyomi) "If I could say something akin to dying words, I believe that, in my own way, I was able to make Koyomi Araragi's adolescence into something more right, even if I couldn't make it better."[1]
Trivia[]
- Ougi's last name, Oshino, means "hidden plains".
- Ougi's first name means "fan", and is taken from how she was introduced to Koyomi as Kanbaru's fan. Additionally, her first name contains the radicals 羽, meaning "wings", as well as 戸, meaning "door". 羽 is also the first kanji in Tsubasa Hanekawa's last name, which hints at the two's rivalry.
