Naoetsu Town

Naoetsu Town (直江(なおえつ)津町(まち), Naoetsu Machi) is the main setting of the Monogatari Series. It is a small town in Japan, and the home of a majority of the cast.

History

Naoetsu has a rich history, highly intertwined with abberations. Around 400 years prior to the start of the story, Kissshot Acerolaorion Heartunderblade arrives in the territory of what would one day be Naoetsu. Jumping randomly from Antarctica, after noticing her power waning, she lands in a lake, blowing the water into the sky and creating rain. The lake is the location of the Shirohebi Shrine, the place of worship for the local people, but since the region was suffering from a drought at the time, the people living around the lake mistakenly thought Kissshot to be a goddess of the shrine, who brought about a miracle to the people. Accepting their faith, she built herself a palace using her Matter Creation, where the lake previously was, and presided over the territory for about a year. However, the "Darkness" soon arrived to correct Kissshot's lie, and swallowed almost everyone living closeby that had been worshipping her. In response to this, Kissshot quickly jumped away from Japan.

Afterwards, with their population dwindling from the "Darkness", the people merged their old religion with another local myth, which was possible due to both worshipping snake gods, and moved their old shrine to the top of the mountain, where it came to be known as North Shirahebi Shrine. However, while the connection between the two appeared stable, it wasn't entirely successful, and an air spot of abberations was created at the location of the shrine. The shrine survived for hundred of years in a dilapidated state before finally collapsing fifteen years prior, due to the arrival of Seishirou Shishirui's ashes to Japan, which absorbed the God there as energy to regenerate. Abberations continued to accumulate there, not because of the air spot but because of attraction to the vampire, and the town became spiritually unbalanced due to the lack of a God keeping the order, until Nadeko Sengoku and later Mayoi Hachikuji took that position. As for the now-dry land where the first Shirohebi Shrine resided, it would go on to become Namishiro Park.
