Summary

"To imagine what it’s like to have people expect things of you—that was a legitimate point. It might be my privilege as a reader to raise my hopes, feel let down, and come to acceptance all at my own convenience. It might be selfish of me. Of course, authors go into the business fully aware that this baggage comes with it, and naturally they profit from having high expectations placed upon them, but I wonder if they feel relieved when they publish something with no continuation, that is, the last book in a series, and are freed from the readers’ expectations."

Nakoto Jibai

Nakoto Jibai (地這(じばい) なこと) is the protagonist of the third short story in the Pnakotic Manuscripts Series. She is a first year highschool student working part time as a bookstore clerk, telling the story of her encounter with Taato Toyama.

Personality[]

Nakoto's biggest hobby is reading, and so, once enrolling in high school, she decided to take a part time job in a field related to books. Concluding that she doesn't have the skill or talent required to become a writer or literary critic, she becomes a clerk for a bookstore, a job she claims "only a person who loves books would be able to perform". When she notices Taato's reading method of starting with the final volume in the series and going backwards, she is very bothered by it, eventually not being able to stand it anymore and has to confront her about it, finding the girl's approach alien. Judging by how upset the seemingly meaningless occurrence made her, Nakoto is a fairly emotional person, unable to simply mind her own business when confronted with something she can't understand. Furthermore, when talking to Taato, Nakoto appears to value the author's intentions and feelings put into the work, something that the other girl reprimands her for, accusing her of pushing her own expectations on someone else.

Appearance[]

Nakoto's appearance is never shown or described.

Background[]

Not much of Nakoto's background is known. She admits to having written fiction before, although she considers it too poorly written to ever share with anyone else. Upon entering highschool, she became a part time clerk at a bookstore.

Trivia[]

  • Nakoto's last name, Jibai, means "crawling on the ground".
  • Nakoto's first name, as with every protagonist of the Pnakotic Manuscripts Series, is a play on the Japanese translation of the Pnakotic Manuscripts (ナコト写本, Nakoto Shahon).
