Summary |
"People can run from the things they don't like all they want. But if they're just averting their eyes, they're not running. As long as you think the current situation is okay, no one can help."
- — Mother Araragi
Araragi's Mother is an unnamed minor character of the Monogatari Series. She is a police officer and the mother of Koyomi Araragi, Tsukihi Araragi and Karen Araragi.
Personality[]
Araragi's mother is shown to be a stern and frank individual from her brief interaction with Tsubasa Hanekawa, stating things plainly without hesitation. The defining trait of the Araragi siblings, their powerful sense of justice, is mostly due to the influence of her and her husband, both police officers with a strict moral code. Thus, Araragi's mother states her values strongly, showing no hesitation. While her values make her a great cop, they have also led to a rough style of parenting, drilling her sense of justice into her kids with rather extreme methods, such as dragging Koyomi to a police department each time he did something wrong, which Ougi Oshino comments might even be called child abuse by some. This has led to Araragi's view of the world being tied to that sense of justice, leaving him broken when it was shown ineffective. However, it seems Araragi's parents learned from their mistakes in rearing their first son, and toned down their methods with Karen and Tsukihi, leading to the two sisters having a much healthier outlook. While she is said to dote on her two daughters a lot, she isn't quite as close to Koyomi, with the boy even running away on Mother's Day. Even so, it's clear that she loves all of her children, even from her brief mentions.
Appearance[]
Araragi's mother is a thin woman with the common traits of the Araragi family, black hair and gray eyes. She styles her head in a spikey bun, also featuring the ahoge native to the Araragi Family. She also has thick eyebrows, and smaller, thinner eyes. She is shown wearing a gray or yellow suit with a skirt, brown thights and a white shirt.
Background[]
Much of Araragi's mother's background is unknown, including how she met her husband, but she gave birth to Koyomi eighteen years ago, and then to Karen four years later. Right after Karen's birth, Mother Araragi became pregnant with Tsukihi. Unbeknownst to her, however, she was infected by the Aberration, the Dying Bird, her third child being an immortal being, although she never found out. The small gap between Karen and Tsukihi's births means that, while the two aren't twins, they are the same age for a period of each year, making them much closer to each other and, comparatively, more distant towards their older brother.
When Araragi was around ten years old, his mother and father invited a young Sodachi Oikura into their home, hoping to keep her away from her family and save her from the abuse. However, after witnessing the Araragis' happy family, Sodachi realized the tragedy of her own family, and decided to run back home in a futile attempt to make herself forget it, trapping herself back into her abusive situation. Since the girl left of her own free will, Araragi's parents couldn't do anything to stop her, and, without evidence, they also couldn't use their authority as police to intervene.
Quotes[]
- (Araragi's mother to Tsubasa Hanekawa) "People can run from the things they don't like all they want. But if they're just averting their eyes, they're not running. As long as you think the current situation is okay, no one can help."

Trivia[]
- She is often referred to as Mamaragi (ママラギ, Mamaragi) by the fanbase, due to her first name not being given.
- A character sporting a similar hairstyle, but lacking the ahoge, is shown in the ending animation of the Koyomimonogatari anime adaptation. While there aren't any other feasible options for who the character might be, Araragi's mother never actually appears in the story of Koyomimonogatari.
