"Do you find the world merely average? Does the future bore you? Are you just getting by? Relax. Even then, life can be epic!"
- — Medaka Kurokami
Medaka Kurokami (
Personality[]
Medaka has a superior air about her, most often using arrogant language and looking down on others, but disregarding them or considering them inferior. She has been able to learn any skills and abilities instantly, ever since she was a child. Due to this, she is unable to understand regular people, and always believes them to be lacking in motivation, as she can't imagine how someone could not be able to achieve something if they really tried. Even so, she loves people and always sees the good in them, showing naivety. She has sworn to help anyone in need, no matter when or where. She has been together with Zenkichi Hitoyoshi throughout her entire life, and he has always seen her as someone he has to prove himself to. To Medaka, Zenkichi is someone she wants to always remain by her side, as he was the reason for her love of humanity in the first place. The first time she met Zenkichi, she asked him to marry her, but the boy rejected the offer. This came as a shock to Medaka, since she had never been unable to obtain something before. From then on, the two kids never parted ways.
Medaka is inhumanely resilient, both physically and morally, but there have been a few people who managed to break Medaka's benevolent will and caused her to fly into a rampage. The first person to do that was Misogi Kumagawa, after she witnessed him ripping Najimi Ajimu's face off. She nearly killed Kumagawa, but he managed to stop her by lying that he was sorry. Medaka will become similarly angered when someone threatens her any friends' lives. These incidents show her inner weakness that is normally covered by her natural talent.
Medaka recived an approval rating close to 100% in the Student Council President election. She is generally loved by the student body, with few exceptions. While Medaka is a top student in all subjects, she lacks a lot of common knowledge, most likely due to her odd childhood. She loves animals, but unfortunately, all animals can instinctively feel her overwhelming strength, and always run away from her. At the end of the series, she is seen in a pile of dogs, having settled down and overcome this effect.
Appearance[]
Medaka is a young girl with long blue hair with an ahoge, red eyes, and a well proportioned body. She is almost always seen wearing the Student Council uniform, with a red ribbon instead of a tie, and modified to show her cleavage. When she loses the position of Student Souncil President, she cuts her hair short and starts wearing it in a small ponytail. She also starts wearing a pair of light-blue tight jeans and a red tank top showing her stomach, with a light yellow jacket covering it.
During the epilogue, she returns to her long-haired look, and resembls her self from the start of the series, albeit more grown up. As a child, she had short hair in a bowl cut, and wore a pink shirt and a white skirt, with white thigh-high stockings.
Background[]
Medaka was born to Hato Tsurubami and Kajiki Kurokami, the head of the Kurokami Group, a highly affluent business conglomerate. The two's marriage was actually planned ahead by Fukurou Tsurubami, Hato's brother, who was in love with his sister but couldn't handle her intense personality, so he selectively bred her with his friend Kajiki, who was so overflowing with love that he married seven wives, as he was unable to pour all his love into only one person. Fukurou's hopes were that the offspring the two produced would be similar enough to his sister, but had more love, so that he could pursue her instead. However, the "breeding" worked way too well, and Fukurou ran into the same problem with Medaka as he did with Hato. When Medaka was born, her mother died, not because of childbirth gone wrong, but because of a heart attack after hearing her daughter's first cries. The Kurokami Group claimed that Hato's entire purpose in life was to birth Medaka.
At the age of two, when she was wondering if there was any worth living with such talent, Medaka was sent to Hakoniwa General Hospital, where she met a young Misogi Kumagawa. The boy explained to Medaka that there isn't, and never was any worth or meaning to life. Medaka initially agreed, but after meeting Zenkichi Hitoyoshi is the same hospital shortly afterwards, she was given a purpose by him, namely to always help people in need. Fukurou mentioned in passing that the two's meeting was also staged by him. Also during her childhood, her sister Kujira Kurokami ran away from home.
Later, during middle school, she first encountered Kouki Akune, who, at that time, was only a lapdog of then-Student Council President, Misogi Kumagawa. Kumagawa used Akune to destroy any students he didn't like. Once Medaka joined their school, Kumagawa targeted her as well, and Akune attacked Medaka at every opportunity he got. However, no matter how much damage he inflicted on her, she never fought back and always returned to school, no matter how injured she was. Zenkichi organized a mob of students to defeat Akune, almost succeeding before Medaka saved Akune, telling him that she would bear all of his attacks until he became a good person. This made Akune fall in love with her, and abandon his delinquent ways. Later, Kumagawa, questioning his love for the girl, viciously attacked a friend of Medaka's, Najimi Ajimu. Medaka, not knowing of Ajimu's status as an immortal Not Equal, flew into a rage, and activated War God Mode for the very first time. Kumagawa was beaten until he lyingly promised to never hurt anyone again.
After entering Hakoniwa Academy, she encountered the, at the time, Student Council President, Kuudou Hinokage, who was close to finishing off a delinquent. Medaka saved him, and then entered a period of constant fighting with Hinokage, as she refused to let any students be hurt. After learning of her reasons, Hinokage recognized her as being way better suited for the job of Student Council President, and recommended her for the role.
Abilities and Equipment[]
- The End (
完成 , Ji Endo, lit. "Perfection Accomplished"): Medaka's plus abnormality, and the cause of her many skills, The End is the ability to instantly master any skill after seeing it once, and even develop it further than the original owner of the skill. This power is the cause of her inability to understand and empathize with others, due to not having to go through the same struggles as anyone else. The End is an unconscious ability, as it activates even when she doesn't want it to. Initially only being activated through observation, The End later evolves into being capable to copy abilities through word of mouth and descriptions, and grows to be able to copy minus abnormalities as well, something which it was previously unable to achieve. The End's only limitations are that it cannot copy styles and it cannot transfer to Medaka the physical characteristics of the ability's possessor.
- Proof of One's Worth (
真骨頂 , Shinkocchou): A set of four trump cards at Medaka's disposal, which she uses to deal with and defuse multiple situations. The first three trump cards are just outlandish aspects of her personality, while the fourth is an actual combat ability.
- 1. Preaching To The Lesser Mortals (
上 から目線性善説 , Uekara Mesen Seizensetsu): Medaka's first and most well known trump card, consisting of her tendency to appeal to the inherent good in people, preaching to her opponents about how some past misfortune must have sent them down the wrong path, and how they can still be reformed. - 2. Tsundere (ツンデレ, Tsundere): Medaka's second trump card, which involves her switching from her naturally strict and regal attitude into a softer, cuter demeanor, which serves as a powerful motivator to her allies.
- 3. Overflowing Love (
行 き過 ぎ愛情表現 , Ikisugi Aijouhyougen): Medaka's third trump card, involving her kissing and expressing her love toward her opponent. Initially, she used it unsparingly towards everyone, most of her elementary school classmates having lost their first kiss to her. However, after Zenkichi asked her to stop doing this, she only ever used it against Mogana Kikaijima during high school.
- 1. Preaching To The Lesser Mortals (
- 4. War God Mode (
乱神 モード, Ranshin Mōdo): Medaka's fourth and final trump card, although it gains many different variations throughout the course of the story. It involves Medaka becoming enraged and abandoning her sense of humanity, turning into a berserker dedicated to obliterating her enemy. While in this form, her physical strength and healing factor are boosted, making her even more overwhelmingly powerful. She only assumes this form when she is under high emotional stress, most of the time due to seeing her friends get injured (as well as when she is harassed by her brother, Maguro Kurokami). While in this form, she blocks out any of her opponents attempts at communication, making her immune to styles. While in this state, Medaka's hair will become light purple in color (pink in the anime adaptation).
- 4. War God Mode (
- Altered God Mode (
改神 モード, Kaishin Mōdo): A variation of War God Mode achieved by copying and mastering all abnormalities of the Thirteen Party members and brainwashing herself with Oudo Miyakonojou's Weighted Words. Under this form, she still gains the boost of physical strength that War God Mode gives her, while still retaining her rationality and controlling her emotions, being able to control everything of herself and overcome Oudo's Unreasonable Taxation abnormality. She can also use an upgraded form of the Kurokami Phantom using the speed and power of Kuudou Hinokage's Theme Song while in Altered God Mode. This mode isn't classified as a skill, but a martial art. While in this state, Medaka's hair will become pitch black.
- Altered God Mode (
- Forsaken God Mode (
廃神 モード, Haishin Mōdo): A variation of War God Mode based on her time under the influence of Kumagawa's Bookmaker. Under this form, she is made weaker than her opponent, no matter how weak they may be, thereby allowing her to forget strength, go all out and truly understand the other person. While in this state, Medaka's hair will become pure white.
- Forsaken God Mode (
- Hybrid God Mode (
混神 モード, Konshin Mōdo): A variation of War God Mode which combines both Forsaken God Mode and Altered God Mode to create a state in which strength and weakness are combined. The exact abilities of this mode are unknown, as the mode was only ever used once, but it's known to not be able to match Kamome Tsurubami's style. While in this state, Medaka's hair will become pure white on the left and pitch black on the right, combining the characterstics of both modes it is based on.
- Hybrid God Mode (
- End God Mode (
終神 モード, Shuushin Mōdo): A variation of War God Mode. Under this form, her blood flow increases drastically, allowing her to move at supersonic speeds and create shadow clones in front of her. These clones have enough speed to break the sound barrier, creating a slip stream to remove the obstructions to Medaka's power. While in this state, Medaka's hair will turn pitch black, similarly to Altered God Mode, but will also grow in volume and become wavy.
- End God Mode (
- Martial Arts: Medaka is proficient in many styles of martial arts, such as Kendo and Judo. She has a number of self titled martial arts moves that she utilizes on a number of occasions:
- Kurokami Phantom (
黒神 ファントム, Kurokami Fantomu): One of Medaka's signature moves which involves her jumping up and down, creating a time lag between her feet hitting the ground and the sound waves generated by the jumping. When the sound lag is at its fullest, Medaka bursts forward, creating a sonic boom which destroys her surroundings. Her opponents are unable to react to the move due to her speed, so rapid that it forcefully breaks through the sound barrier.- Kurokami Phantom: Proper Version (
黒神 ファントム ちゃんとした版 ): A variation of Kurokami Phantom achieved by witnessing Hinokage's Theme Song. It allows Medaka to use the move with no physical strain or damage, at the cost of being in Altered God Mode and only using it three times a day. - Kurokami Final (
黒神 ファイナル, Kurokami Fainaru): A variation of Kurokami Phantom useable only in End God Mode. To use the technique, Medaka must create a shadow clone in front of her which breaks the sound barrier without Medaka losing any of her own speed or power. Then, she follows the slip stream created by the clone.
- Kurokami Phantom: Proper Version (
- Kurokami Rolling Savate (
黒神 ローリングソバット, Kurokami Rōringu Sobatto): Medaka performs a Savate style reverse figure kick to the opponent's face. - Kurokami Lariat (
黒神 ラリアット, Kurokami Rariatto): Medaka strikes her opponent's neck with the inside of her outstretched arm. - Kurokami Climb (
黒神 クライム, Kurokami Kuraimu): Using Yoshinogari's claws and Isahaya's spikes, Medaka can scale building walls as high as the fifth floor. Medaka doesn't seem to have much control over her momentum however, as she reached the fifth floor while only intending to climb to the third. However, this may have been because she was in a hurry. - Kurokami Dancing (
黒神 ダンシング, Kurokami Danshingu): Using Kunisaki's bicycle, Medaka can quickly maneuver around multiple people, even while moving up a staircase. Because of how quickly she moves, Medaka needs to tie up her hair before beginning. - Kurokami Reflect (
黒神 リフレクト, Kurokami Refurekuto): Borrowing Myouri Unzen's Super Balls, Medaka unleashes a barrage of attacks from several angles at amazing speed. However, Medaka claims that the angles are completely random, as she lacks Unzen's calculation abilities, at least for the quantity of balls she uses to attack. The actual effectiveness of this attack is unknown, as her opponent, Takachiho, was able to dodge every single ball. - Kurokami Open Blow (
黒神 オープンブロー, Kurokami Ōpun Burō): In War God Mode, Medaka charges forward and attacks with a palm strike. The hit packs enough force to knock back Tsurubami, and caused him to spit up blood. - Kurokami Hip Attack (
黒神 ヒップアタック, Kurokami Hippu Atakku): While her body is being restrained, Medaka lifts herself with her stomach muscles, then drops herself on her opponent's chest with enough force to make them cough up blood. Medaka labels this as a "girly" attack.
- Kurokami Phantom (
- Language User (
言葉使 い, Kotoba Tsukai): Medaka's style. After fighting the Eight Hundred Lies User Kakegae Yuzuriha, Medaka has grasped the basics of a style. She is able to read her opponent's feelings to counter appropriately, though at present the best she can do is throw a punch. Though the most basic of the basics, Medaka's punch is now recognized as an attack by Iihiko. By using sound ("words") to vibrate and stimulate her muscles, Medaka can pump blood through her body even without a heartbeat, allowing her to continue moving even with a stopped heart. This state is only temporary, however, and is a last resort. As a side effect, Medaka's skin convulses, repelling physical contact. The vibrations also cause her entire body to act as a heart, increasing both her blood flow and physical skill beyond that of an average human.
Quotes[]
- (Medaka in her speech to the student body) "Do you find the world merely average? Does the future bore you? Are you just getting by? Relax. Even then, life can be epic!"
- (To Myouri Unzen) "There was no reason for me to get attacked by you. And therefore, there was no reason to dodge."
- (To Misogi Kumagawa) "Those who win are not strong. It is those who lose and crawl back up who are strong!"
- (To Oudo Miyakonojou) "…I've just had my birthday. I am now sixteen years old. It has been decided that when I am twenty years old, I will succeed as the president of the Kurokami Group. That means I have only four years left. When that time comes I will probably be a different person from now. So for a little longer please let me be myself. I really enjoy this very much, this so called springtime of youth."
- (To Bukiko Udou) "Before I can be happy I wish to be free. I am so happy, because, for the first time I can fight for myself."
- (To Hato Tsurubami) "Every time I see people, I know people. I grew to admire people. I love people. As long as this feeling stays within me, instead of stating how the world goes, I want to question how the world goes."
