Summary[]
Medaka Kurokami makes her inauguration speech as the new student council president of Hakoniwa Academy, and announces the establishment of the suggestion box. Then, Hansode Shiranui calls out to Zenkichi Hitoyoshi, commenting on how she's surprised that Medaka got elected, to which Zenkichi retorts that nothing she does surprises him. Shiranui asks if he's going to join the student council, to which he vehemently refuses right before being called to the council room over the loudspeakers. As he walks away, irritated, a classmate asks Shiranui about the nature of Zenkichi and Medaka's relationship, to which she explains that they're childhood friends.
In the student council room, Zenkichi walks in on Medaka changing clothes, causing him embarrassment, though Medaka is unbothered, mentioning that they used to take baths together. Then, as she explains how she's fulfilling all the positions of the student council before appointing anyone else, Zenkichi thinks about how there's nothing Medaka can't do. She asks him for help with solving all the requests piled up in the suggestion box. He initially refuses, but then accepts after being told that she needs him, thinking that he's always getting dragged around by her. Looking through the suggestions, he deems most of them to be stupid, but then finds one serious request from the judo club.
In the changing room of the judo club, the captain of the judo club tells Akasaka about his request for an additional member in order to compete in a contest, as their club only has four members. While Akasaka is worried about his exaggeration, the captain reassures him that Medaka will probably allow them to borrow Zenkichi for the match. However, as they walk into the judo hall, they find Medaka and Zenkichi waiting for them, the former admonishing them for being late. She orders them to get seated, then explains that she'll allow them to borrow Zenkichi, but that they need to reform their club, and so they must start by winning the gold medal in judo at the next Olympics, which stuns them. They vehemently say that her plan is impossible, but she reassures them that she'll practice with them, and asks Zenkichi to come at her. They initially underestimate her, but then she performs a flawless throw, stunning them again. They try to take their request back, but she doesn't allow them. Later, Shiranui walks in, searching for Zenkichi, only to find everyone collapsed to the floor. Learning of the situation, she offhandedly comments that it's pointless to try training the club members, which pisses Akasaka off, though Shiranui just walks out casually after telling Zenkichi to tell Medaka that you can't force someone to try their best when they don't want to.
The next day, Akasaka hands Medaka everyone's resignation letters, saying that they can't meet her demands. When she inquires about Akasaka's feelings, he says that there's no point staying in the club if he has nobody to practice with. Left alone, Medaka asks Zenkichi to practice with her, to which he comments that she's forgotten why she started this in the first place. Later, in the cafeteria, Shiranui explains to Zenkichi that the judo club used to be reputable, but the new captain focused on having fun as opposed to serious practice, which led to laziness. The serious members all left, leaving only four people. She comments that nobody would feel sad, even if a club like that disbanded.
As Medaka approaches a distraught Akasaka, he tells her to leave him alone, but she explains that she is going to hold the competition regardless, even if everyone left. When Akasaka questions why she tries so hard to help a stranger like him, she declares that helping strangers is her reason to live. She then strikes a nerve as she asks him if he was truly enjoying himself with judo, to which he angrily yells that not everyone can be as strong-willed as her before briskly walking away. She, however, dismisses this claim, saying that just because he's not as strong-willed as her doesn't mean that he's weak.
Medaka announces the beginning of the customary match between Hakoniwa Academy and Suisou Academy, a lone Zenkichi facing off against the many Suisou practitioners. They all wonder if it's alright for them all to face off against a single person, but they hesitate to object to Medaka, when the intimidating Beppu declares that "they'll give them a good one", Zenkichi noting his thirst for blood. Medaka tells him not to worry about anything, and he reminds her with a grin that he's only doing this for her "just this once".
As Akasaka aimlessly wonders around, Shiranui appears and tries to drag him to the match, despite him protesting that it has nothing to do with him anymore. She tells him that everyone else was already there. Arriving in front of the window to the judo hall, Akasaka, along with the three other judo club members, see Zenkichi being thrown down by Beppu again and again, rising up each time. One of the club members explains that Beppu is a notoriously violent first year, and is deliberately avoiding winning just so he can continue beating Zenkichi up. Akasaka asks the former captain if he's enjoying himself now, which he instantly denies. Then, a nonchalant Shiranui walks up to the four and tells them to move out of the way so she can see inside, encouraging them to go in. As Beppu smashes Zenkichi to the ground once more, he turns to Medaka, asking if it's her turn, to which she retorts that he shouldn't make light of her childhood friend, who rises up once more, to the surprise of everyone watching. When someone asks why Zenkichi is doing this to himself, Medaka explains that the reason is because he's been in love with her since he was two years old, causing his cheeks to redden. As she comments that it's natural to do your best for the people you care about, the four judo club members finally walk in, and Medaka tells Zenkichi that he can win now, to which he instantly throws Beppu to the ground, revealing that he, too, has been practicing judo since he was two years old, and that he wouldn't let himself just be thrown around, though collapsing immediately afterwards.
Zenkichi narrates that, after his passing out, the competition went on normally, and the judo club won two matches and lost two. They said that they weren't satisfied with the results and would strive to do better. As Zenkichi complains about being the only one to get beat up, Medaka puts the vice president armband on him, causing him to yell at her that she can surely handle everything by herself. Medaka responds that, while she can handle everything, there's nothing that she loves or enjoys doing, and thus wouldn't be able to accomplish anything if not for Zenkichi, stating that she's "just another piece of trash" without him. She then hugs his head to her chest, thanks him and asks him to stay by her side if he doesn't hate her. To this, Zenkichi, with a blushing face, yells out "just this once".
Parallels to the Main Series[]
- The main series also begins with Medaka giving an inauguration speech, followed by Zenkichi complaining to Shiranui about Medaka, only to be immediately called to the student council room right after declaring that he wouldn't join it.
- The judo club takes on a similar role to the kendo club in the main story, albeit more fleshed out.
- Suisou Academy is featured as the competing judo team, which would later reappear in the main series as the previous school Misogi Kumagawa attended.
- Zenkichi ends up joining the student council after completing the first request. However, he is given the position of vice-president in the one-shot, instead of general affairs manager like in the main series.
