The 30th Box: Sigh, What a Pain (第(だい)３０箱(はこ)　いやあ困(こま)った困(こま)った, Dai 30 Hako: Iyā Komatta Komatta) is the ninth chapter of the Thirteen Party arc and the overall thirtieth chapter of the Medaka Box manga series, written by Nisio Isin and illustrated by Akira Akatsuki. It was collected in the fourth volume.

Summary

Medaka accepts the "test", and Shigusa commends her for it, thinking to himself that nobody, not even those of the Thirteen Party are perfect, so there's no way she can be either, affirming to himself that he'll take her down. Shigusa explains that the USB drive hanging around his neck contains all the research data he produced while working for the Flask Plan, baiting her with it as the objective, stating that he's giving her a reason to fight so that her pacifism doesn't get in the way. Shigusa readies his stance, telling Medaka not to underestimate him, which she responds in kind to by taking up a boxer's stance of her own, surprising Zenkichi with how seriously she's taking the match. Shigusa praises her stance, though he's internally intimidated by how balanced it is despite her young age, thinking that there must be some secret behind her genius. As the battle starts, Shigusa immediately goes for a flying knee to Medaka's face, revealing that his style isn't actually boxing, but kickboxing, which prompts Zenkichi to call him a cheater, though Medaka dismisses it, saying that Nabeshima wouldn't be satisfied with a trick of this level. Akune and Mogana Kikaijima excitedly comment that Medaka stopped the flying knee with a headbutt, though Shigusa internally retorts, asking what kind of idiot would do that. Shigusa sends her another kick, but as he does so, he notices how she isn't even trying to dodge. The attack connects, sending her flying, and she comments on its strength, though then shows off the spoils of her strategy, having taken the drive from Shigusa while he was attacking.

Impressed, Shigusa compliments Medaka's guts, calling her an Abnormal among Abnormal, though he then adds that it's unfortunate for her that she ran into him, the strongest of the Thirteen Party, right on the first floor. Medaka doesn't understand Shigusa's words, having already won by taking the drive, but then before she realizes it, Shigusa has already retrieved the drive from her. Everyone is surprised by his speed, but Zenkichi thinks to himself that it's not just speed that's allowing him to move like that, as if by the time you realize it he's already past you. Unou and Sanou Tsushima comment that such a performance is to be expected from the Thirteen Party's resident kickboxer, though Shigusa says that they shouldn't forget that he's still a researcher, calling the data more important than his life, and saying that it won't be easy to take it from him, though as he turns around, he is surprised by Medaka's fearless smile. She says that it's fortunate she ran into him that early, because that means that, if she can't surpass him with physical strength, she won't have to worry about the rest of the group. Talking about his speed, she says it's more so that the speed of his decisions is fast, rather than that of his movement, as if he doesn't think before moving, which only provokes silence from Shigusa.

Saying that she first has to figure out his ability, she takes out a pile of Super Balls in each hand, telling her friends that she borrowed them from Myouri Unzen, though adding that she can't calculate their ricochet trajectory like him. She sends all of the Super Balls towards Shigusa at once, the twins commenting that he can't possibly dodge all of those with footwork alone. However, Shigusa nonetheless avoids every ball, Zenkichi loudly asking how much speed he has, astonished, though Medaka explains that it's not actually speed allowing him to move like that, but rather his amazing reflexes, though adding that she's never seen someone use reflexes for attacking before. Shigusa confidently explains that he's been able to put his brain on auto-pilot ever since he was born, then further adding that, since he's not using his brain for attacks, he gets to instead use it to think and figure things out, and he declares that he figured out the secret behind Medaka's superiority, which catches her attention.
