The 29th Box: La (第(だい)２９箱(はこ)　あん, Dai 29 Hako: An) is the eighth chapter of the Thirteen Party arc and the overall twenty-ninth chapter of the Medaka Box manga series, written by Nisio Isin and illustrated by Akira Akatsuki. It was collected in the fourth volume.

Summary

Medaka's group come face to face with another door. When they ask about it, Unou and Sanou Tsushima explain that it's an elevator door that leads to the final floor, which is also the first floor of the Flask Plan, floor 13. However, to open it, they must input the right combination of kanji and hiragana. Fed up, Medaka decides that they take the stairs instead. The twins warn that if they go through there, they'll have to navigate through the entire facility, but Medaka takes on the challenge, adding that they'd come there to scout out the whole facility anyway, so skipping to the end would defeat the purpose. Observing them through a monitor, Hakama Shiranui comments on the unevenness of her team, saying that he didn't expect Mogana Kikaijima and Kouki Akune to tag along, and sends her granddaughter Hansode Shiranui a suspicious glance, asking if she's planning something, though the girl just says that she was instigating a little. Hakama says that it's fine, since the more people there are to hold her down, the better, though Hansode warns that the old man shouldn't underestimate the two Specials, adding that Medaka's most abnormal trait is her authority over others. Hakama accepts her warning, saying he'll take it to heart, though he thinks to himself that the one who really catches his attention is Zenkichi Hitoyoshi.

As they walk along, Akune asks Zenkichi what kind of training Maguro Kurokami made them do, which Zenkichi explains. Akune then resolutely states that, when they eventually run into a member of the Thirteen Party, he'll immediately jump straight at them and attack. Zenkichi comments on how violent he sounds, but Akune explains that he doesn't want to be taken out easily like in the confrontation with Myouri Unzen, and that it's his duty as the only second year on the council to protect them. Innerwardly impressed, Zenkichi confidently declares that he doesn't need Akune's help and that he'll be the one to look cool protecting the girls. Medaka interrupts the boys' conversation, pointing out that they'd been running in circles for some time. At that point, Unou and Sanou explain that the first floor of the facility is like a labyrinth, smugly asking them what they plan to do now that they can't even return. In response, Zenkichi asks them why they're following them, also adding that, while they're trying to sound cool, they're also lost. The twins yell out that the group broke the door and took their job away, inwardly thinking to themselves that they followed along since the group is strangely good at drawing people towards them. Zenkichi asks what approach they should take to escape, at which point Medaka suggests that Kikaijima use the ability she'd used when they went to the maze at the amusment park (prompting the boys to be shocked that they weren't invited too). Kikaijima is at first reluctant, but after Medaka gives her permission, she does it: yells out the note "la" at an extremely high volume, shocking everyone aside from Medaka. Zenkichi and Akune yell at Kikaijima about the deafening sound, though Medaka declares that she has a good reading of the layout thanks to her, and asks everyone to follow her, surprising the boys. Unou and Sanou explain that she basically used her as a sonar, similarly to a whale or bat. Realizing Kikaijima's tremendous lung capacity, Zenkichi thinks that he was full of himself to think he needed to protect Kikaijima, thinking that there's no teammate more reliable than her.

All of a sudden, Shigusa Takachiho appears behind them and compliments their methodology, stating that they're the first to pass through the maze like that. Everyone is surprised to see him, and after he introduces himself, Akune and Zenkichi both immediately jump at him, preparing to punch him, though before they know it they end up on the ground, they attacks having completely missed, Shigusa walking nonchalantly towards Medaka. He suggests that she take her time to check everything out, adding that he was told by the headmaster to welcome them all. Looking at him, Zenkichi wonders to himself what the man just did, thinking that it was like they'd been the ones who avoided him. Medaka asks if, by welcome, he means testing them, and says that she remembers his face from the headmaster's office, as he was the one trying to provoke her. In response, Shigusa asks if this is what she meant by provoking, showing in his hand Medaka's pair of glasses and the rubber band tying her hair, having taken them before she could realize. Putting the glasses on, Shigusa takes his labcoat off and introduces himself once more, declaring that she'll have to beat hm to pass. Medaka, taking off her own costume to reveal her regular student council uniform, takes on the challenge, saying that she'd also wanted to test out how much she powered up.
