The 12th Box: I Like You More Than Money (第(だい)１２箱(はこ)　お金(かね)より好(す)き, Dai 12 Hako: Okane Yori Suki) is the twelfth chapter of the Medaka Box manga series and its first arc, the Student Council Executive arc, written by Nisio Isin and illustrated by Akira Akatsuki. It was collected in the second volume.

Summary

Tazaku Aso announces that the final match of the event will be a cavalry battle, and then Shiranui explains the rules: you get points by taking another team's headband, but lose if yours is taken or if you fall into the water. However, to add a twist to the game, the higher ranking the team is, the more points their headband will be worth. Zenkichi praises his friend's ingenuity, yelling out that he loves her, to which she emphatically responds that she loves herself as well, prompting Medaka to punch Zenkichi in the head out of jealousy before telling him not to lose sight of his goal. Meanwhile, the swim team trio talk about what strategy they should go for, realizing that the rules were set up specifically so that they would fight the student council. Kikaijima initially proposes that they avoid wasting their time on that, but when Medaka taunts them, saying that she'll teach them that there are things more important than money, a phrase that is taboo around her, Kikaijima becomes livid and takes back her words and declares that she will drop Medaka, intimidating both of her teammates.

The moment Aso declares the match to have begun, Medaka and Kikaijima instantly go at each other. Shiranui opines that, while Medaka is clearly the stronger one in terms of physical ability, the two supporting Kikaijima have far better teamwork than Zenkichi and Akune, making them more or less evenly matched. Medaka compliments Kikaijima's spirit, the latter asking how that's the case when Medaka called them "money zombies" before. The student council president explains that the way they've been competing shows that they have no regard for they're lives, and declares that she won't let them off the hook for saying that they value money more than their lives, momentarily overpowering Kikaijima. However, Kikaijima shoots back that her father ran out on her and her mother is sick because they had no money, and that Yakushima's family split apart because they had no money, and Tanegashima's orphanage was forclosed because it had no money, and then declares that, regardless of what anyone thinks, money is more important than life itself and that she'd sacrifice herself for money. She then manages to push Medaka off of her support right as Zenkichi throws out one of the floaters on his arm, yelling that no one would care if they died.

Both Aso and the swim team think the student council lost, but then Medaka reprimands Kikaijima for her words, telling her that she's earned her wrath as she reveals herself to be standing atop the floater thrown by Zenkichi, much to the shock of the commentator. Zenkichi says that, while he doesn't care about the outcome of the match, he was pissed off by Kikaijima's last statement, and encourages Medaka as she jumps out at the stunned swim team girl. She pushes Kikaijima off of her teammates, putting her arms around her neck and saying, with tears in her eyes, that she'd be sad if any of them died before kissing her, shocking everyone but Zenkichi, who declares it to be Medaka's 3rd proof of her worth, "overflowing love". The two fall into the water, but Shiranui notes that Medaka took off Kikaijima's headband mid-fall, and when asked for her ruling, says that Medaka's last move counts, as she hadn't touched the water while standing on the floater, thus taking the lead.

As Yakushima and Tanegashima wait outside of the pool, Medaka comes out with Kikaijima in her arms, saying that no price would be worth replacing this match. When Tanegashima confronts her and yells out that this won't change the way they live their lives and that they'll still do everything they can for money, Medaka tells them to go for it as long as they're not risking their lives, and even excitedly roots for them to create their pool of money, asking them to invite her to swim in it too. She tells them to take care of their teammate's precious life. Regaining consciousness, Kikaijima faintly asks the two boys which is more important, her or money, to which Tanegashima instantly replies that it's obviously money. She then asks which they like more, between her and money, to which the two immediately point at her, and with a warm smile, she reciprocates their feelings. Then, as the match comes to an end, Aso announces the winner: Nekomi Nabeshima, who'd sneakily swiped the headbands of every other team while they were distracted with the confrontation between the student council and the swim team. She brags about her win and challenges Medaka to face her again some time.

Zenkichi narrates that, after her win, she shared some of the earned funds with the other clubs. Medaka also got into some trouble for involving her personal funds into a school function, and so, to prevent future cases like that, she hired a new treasurer for the student council: Mogana Kikaijima, who tells the other two boys that she won't forgive them if they waste money, the two in shock at this turn of events. Medaka also mentions that Kikaijima's salary is 300 yen per day, which the boys remark is surprisingly low.
