Background[]
The series was first advertised as part of the NEXT20 anniversary project as a brand new Nisio Isin series, the first in 7 years. The Henkyaku Kaitou series debuted with Phantom Thief Flaneur's Patrol on September 7, 2022.
Premise[]
The series revolves around the second generation Flaneur, son of a legendary phantom thief, who has amassed an enormous collection of stolen art pieces and other valuable items. His successor, however, dons the identity of Flaneur in order to return all of the stolen items to their original owners, in the meantime having to deal with the great detective Toraharuka Urusawa.

Title[]
The name Flaneur comes from a French word meaning "a man who strolls around observing society". Each of the three titular characters of the series' novels are described with words beginning with the character 怪, meaning "mysterious": Phantom Thief (怪盗), Mystery Man (怪人) and Wonder (怪傑).
