Haruzemi Maniwa (
Personality[]
Haruzemi was said to be someone with a lust for power, having the ambition to become one of the twelve bosses. He seemed to be willing to do anything to achieve his goal, as he betrayed his promise with his friend Matsuzemi Maniwa in order to convince everyone that the ninja art was his and his alone; this underhanded act would later lead to his death at the hands of his former friend[1].
Appearance[]
Haruzemi appears to be a slim man with droopy, large green eyes. He is shown wearing a cicada-themed outfit consisting of sleeveless green ninja garb and pants, green gloves which go up to the bicep and end in cicada wings, and a mask which covers his face and head, with cicada wings attached to it.
Background[]
Haruzemi used to be very close friends with Matsuzemi, and the two came up with the new ninja art, Submerged Chrysalis. However, in his desire to be picked as one of the bosses, Haruzemi arranged an exhibition of the technique, calling it solely his own. In response, Matsuzemi exploited its weakness and killed him[1].
Abilities and Equipment[]
- Ninja Art: Submerged Chrysalis (
忍法 潜 り蛹 , Ninpō: Moguri Sanagi): A technique which allows the user to submerge themselves beneath the ground without a need to use a breathing tube, while also being able to survey the surface. Its weak spot is that it cannot detect anything below, which lead to Haruzemi being killed from an attack from under him. The true principle behind the technique is unknown, although it is mentioned that it follows the same logic as the grubs of cicadas, which can survive in the Earth for years by absorbing nutrients from the roots of plants. While disguised as Haruzemi, Koumori explained it as putting oneself in suspended animation, but this is revealed to be a lie[1].
Trivia[]
- The Maniwa surname means "garden of truth", partly suggesting the animal motif of the ninja clan.
- Haruzemi's first name means "spring cicada".
