Hakohiko Mukaezuki (迎槻(むかえづき) 箱彦(はこふこ), Mukaezuki Hakohiko), also known as Hakohiko the Mukaezuki (迎(むか)え突(づ)きの箱彦(はこふこ), Mukaezuki no Hakohiko), is a character from the Sekai Series. He is a third year student at Outouin Private Academy, the childhood friend of Ririsu Kotohara and the captain of the kendo club.

Personality

Hakohiko is a friendly and amiable person, with a casual demeanor. He is a responsible person, taking his role as captain of the kendo club seriously, and is thus exasperated by Rokunin Kazusawa's antics, as he believes the boy to be capricious and troublesome. He has a friendship with Samatoki Hitsuuchi, often conversing with him, and usually trying to give him advice on certain issues. He has been close friends with Kotohara for many years, and considers her akin to family, never seeing her in a romantic light. The two are close enough that they stick together after accidentally committing murder, with Hakohiko willing to bear the responsibility for the crime.

Hakohiko often warns Samatoki against associating with Kuroneko Byouinzaka, calling the girl dangerous and having a very negative impression of her due to his past experience with her. She appears to have left him with some kind of trauma, although his reasons for finding her so threatening remain vague. He is shown to casually drink alcohol and even smoke cigarettes, considering himself more of a delinquent than a sportsman. He often badgers Samatoki about his siscon tendencies, advising him to take a little more distance from his little sister, although Samatoki never listens.

Appearance

Hakohiko is a tall and muscular young man with short hair, thin eyes and thick eyebrows. He is shown wearing the Outouin Academy uniform, consisting of a gray gakuran and gray pants. He is also shown wearing a kendo uniform, consisting of a dark-colored hakama and kimono.

Background

Hakohiko and Kotohara became friends at an early age, reportedly as far back as kindergarten, and both were members of the kendo club since elementary school. During middle school, he got into a serious fight with Kotohara. Although the nature of the incident is unclear, one of its facets was Hakohiko taking advantage of Kuroneko Byouinzaka's sexual services. The incident left Kotohara with a big hatred of Kuroneko, while Hakohiko remained traumatized by her in some way. He even admitted that his first kiss was with Kuroneko. Later, upon entering high school, Kotohara left the kendo club, but Hakohiko continued practicing, eventually becoming the captain of Outouin Academy's kendo club. Hakohiko met Samatoki, and the two remained friends all throughout high school, Hakohiko eventually introducing Kotohara to Samatoki as well.

• Hakohiko's last name, Mukaezuki, is written with the characters for "welcome" and "zelkova tree", and is a phonetic pun on Mukaezuki (迎(むか)え突(づ)き), an illegal kendo move, which is also the source of his nickname.
