"Do you know what a third dan in kendo means!? It means that I'm three times stronger than all of you!!"
- — Habataki Hyuuga
Habataki Hyuuga (
Personality[]
Habataki initially appears to be a laid-back and normal, if unremarkable, student. However, that is just his attempt at "playing nice" he quickly shows his true colors after things don't go according to his plans: Habataki is, in reality, a man with a twisted personality and violent tendencies. Though he calls himself a serious, earnest man, he finds partaking in group activities bothersome, and bears particular disdain for club hierarchies, like having to respect his seniors despite being more skilled than them. He thinks of certain people as "weeds", and sees no value in trying to help them improve or cultivate their talents, seeing their disposal as a better alternative. He has no issue with attacking people, even in underhanded ways, like striking them from behind, if it's for the sake of his goals. When having the advantage over someone in a battle, Habataki becomes cocky, lauding his superior skills and monologuing. He is also shown to be fairly vindictive, initially looking to get revenge after his defeat[1].
Relationships[]
Mahibi Moji[]
Mahibi Moji is initially the target of Habataki's attack, Habataki viewing him, as well as his other delinquent friends, as mere "weeds" that the school would be better off without, and trying to violently get rid of them. Even after the two become clubmates, they still butt heads all the time, Habataki's lack of patience in instructing the members clashing with Mahibi's stubbornness, though they still reluctantly cooperate due to their shared reverence for Medaka[1].
Medaka Kurokami[]
Having entrusted his request to her student council, Habataki is initially disappointed by Medaka, considering her a failure due to her decision to reform the delinquents of the kendo hall instead of forcing them out, an approach which he disagrees with. However, after Medaka gets the request to reform him from Hansode Shiranui, Habataki receives the same aggressive correction as the delinquents did, after which he ends up falling for her, joining the kendo club at her request[1].
Zenkichi Hitoyoshi[]
Zenkichi Hitoyoshi is Habataki's classmate. The two briefly become enemies during Habataki's assault on the delinquents, Habataki even knocking Zenkichi out from behind. Later, when Zenkichi interrupts him beating up Mahibi and his friends, Habataki tries to appeal to Zenkichi, who'd also shown doubt at Medaka's plan to reform them, and Zenkichi even agrees that he thinks Habataki's viewpoint is also right, though he then adds that Medaka is "more right", after which defeating Habataki, thereby getting even with him[1]. After that, the two are shown to become somewhat friendly, occasionally eating lunch together, Habataki even trying to give Zenkichi advice over his reputation as the "Club Typhoon", though when Zenkichi points out how concerned the boy seems over him, he becomes flustered and loudly denies it[2].
Appearance[]
Habataki is a teenage boy with medium-length spiky dark blue hair (dark green in the anime), longer on one side than on the other, and thin, slanted eyes which he typically keeps closed. He is shown wearing the Hakoniwa Academy uniform, consisting of dark blue pants and a white shirt under a white double breasted jacket with dark blue cuffs, bisected by a yellow stripe, and a dark blue sailor collar with a white outline and an inner yellow stripe. Around the shirt collar he wears a red tie with a yellow vertical stripe and yellow bottom edge. His shoes are dark blue, with a yellow cross design and brown soles, and he always wears a pair of large rounded glasses with white rims.
Background[]
During middle school, Habataki was presumably a part of the kendo club. According to Shiranui, he was involved in various acts of violence throughout middle school. Though his kendo is at a national level, his disdain for group activities and club hierarchies led him pursue Hakoniwa Academy, whose kendo club had disbanded, in order avoid having to deal with others, leading him to become a student of Class 1-1, though he failed to account for the delinquents occupying the kendo hall, whom, after Medaka's intervention, Habataki ended up a member of the kendo club alongside[1].
Abilities & Equipment[]
- Kendo (
剣道 , Kendō): Habataki is a third dan in kendo, described by Shiranui as a national level practitioner. Additionally, having had a history of violence from middle school, he is an experienced fighter, capable of defeating Mahibi and his comrades with ease. Even so, he is quickly dispatched by Zenkichi, being no match for him[1].- Shinai (
竹刀 , Shinai): The shinai bamboo sword is Habataki preferred weapon, even outside of official kendo matches, using it to bludgeon Zenkichi and knock him out from behind[1].
